Convert Pace or Speed
What Is a Running Speed Converter?
Runners talk in pace (min/km or min/mi) while bikes, watches, and science often use speed (km/h, mph, m/s). This converter translates between them instantly so you can compare workouts, race plans, and GPS data without mental math.
Inspired by tools like the SportCalculators running speed converter, our version adds unit switching that keeps your equivalent effort, live results, and clear human-speed context.
How to Use This Converter
- Pick a unit: min/km, km/h, min/mi, mph, m/s, or ft/s.
- Enter your value: pace uses minutes + seconds; speed uses a single number.
- Read every equivalent: results update live in metric and imperial.
- Check human context: see whether you’re in walking, jogging, racing, or world-record territory.
How Fast Can a Human Run?
Peak human speed depends on distance. Short sprints are much faster than sustained racing:
| Level | Approx. speed | Equivalent pace |
|---|---|---|
| Brisk walk | ~5 km/h (3 mph) | ~12:00 /km · ~19:20 /mi |
| Easy jog | ~8–10 km/h (5–6 mph) | ~6:00–7:30 /km |
| Solid recreational race | ~12–16 km/h (7.5–10 mph) | ~3:45–5:00 /km |
| Elite distance racing | ~20–24 km/h (12–15 mph) | ~2:30–3:00 /km |
| Usain Bolt 100m WR average | ~37.6 km/h (23.4 mph) | ~1:36 /km (sprint only) |
| Usain Bolt peak (recorded) | ~44.7 km/h (27.8 mph) | ~1:20 /km (peak instant) |
So far, no verified human has sustained ~45 km/h for a full race distance — that peak is a brief sprint moment. For training, most runners live between walking and mid-teens km/h.
Conversion Formulas
Values are converted through meters per second (m/s):
m/s = 1000 ÷ (60 × min/km)m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6m/s = 1609.344 ÷ (60 × min/mi)m/s = mph × 0.44704km/h = m/s × 3.6·mph = m/s ÷ 0.44704·ft/s = m/s × 3.28084
Why Convert Pace ↔ Speed?

- Cross-sport context: Compare run speed with bike outputs from the Cycling Cadence Calculator.
Common Questions
Is pace the same as speed?
No. Pace is time per distance (e.g. 5:00/km). Speed is distance per time (e.g. 12 km/h). They describe the same effort in inverse units.
What is a good running speed?
It depends on distance and fitness. Many beginners jog around 8–10 km/h. Competitive recreational 5K runners often hold ~12–15 km/h. World-class sprinters briefly exceed 40 km/h.
Can this predict race times?
It converts units only. For finish-time estimates across race distances, use the Running Pace Calculator or Marathon Calculator.
